How Does Key Programming Work?

Modern vehicle keys contain electronic components that need to be recognised by the vehicle before the engine will start. This is where key programming comes in. When we program a new key, we establish an electronic connection between the key and the vehicle's immobiliser system, allowing the vehicle to recognise the key as authorised.

At Horizon Locksmiths, our locksmith uses specialist key programming equipment connected directly to the vehicle's OBD2 diagnostic port. The OBD2 port provides access to the vehicle's electronic systems and allows our programming equipment to communicate with the vehicle's immobiliser and key system.

Once connected, the equipment communicates with the vehicle and allows us to carry out the required programming procedure. Depending on the vehicle, this can involve registering the new key's transponder information with the immobiliser system and, where applicable, programming the remote locking functions.

What Does The Process Involve?

The general process involves:

Connecting to the OBD2 port – Our locksmith locates the vehicle's diagnostic port and connects the appropriate programming equipment.
Communicating with the vehicle – The programming equipment communicates with the vehicle's electronic control systems to access the relevant key and immobiliser functions.
Adding the new key – The new key's electronic identification is programmed into the vehicle's system so the immobiliser can recognise it.
Programming the remote – Where required, the key's remote buttons can also be programmed to operate the vehicle's central locking.
Testing the key – Once programming is complete, we test the key to make sure it is recognised by the vehicle, starts the engine and operates the required functions correctly.

What is car key Transponder?

A car key transponder is a small electronic chip built inside most modern car keys. It plays a vital role in your vehicle's security system by communicating with the car's immobiliser before the engine will start.

When you insert your key into the ignition or press the Start button on a push-button start vehicle, the car sends a signal to the transponder chip. If the chip contains the correct programmed code, the immobiliser recognises the key and allows the engine to start. If the code is missing or incorrect, the vehicle will remain immobilised to help prevent theft.

Can you program a new car key if I've lost all my keys?

Yes. We can create and program a new car key even if you've lost every key to your vehicle. Our mobile locksmith service can come to your location, cut a new key, and program it on-site for most makes and models.

How long does car key programming take?

Most car key programming appointments take between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on the vehicle make, model, and the type of key being programmed

Will programming erase my existing keys?

Sometimes, depending on your vehicle. While most vehicles allow us to add a new key without affecting your existing keys, some makes and models require the vehicle's key memory to be reset during programming—particularly in all keys lost situations. When this happens, any previously programmed keys are erased from the vehicle's memory and will no longer start the car.

For the majority of vehicles, however, we can simply add a new key to the existing key memory. This means your current keys will continue to work, which is ideal if you believe a misplaced key may still be somewhere around your home or office.

If one of your keys has been lost or stolen, we can also remove it from your vehicle's immobiliser system during the programming process. This ensures the missing key can no longer start your vehicle, giving you added security and peace of mind.
